GOLF: GLENN CONQUERS THE NIGHTMARE

It was a test of fairway woods, long irons, sand wedges and nerves.

And the John Glenn girls golf team passed with flying colors.

John Glenn (227) took on the challenge of The Nightmare in West Branch and came through with a victory over host Ogemaw Heights (245).

“After playing some shorter tracks lately, this was definitely a test — and we did pretty well,” Glenn coach Pete Remington said. “On a course that is lined with bunkers and has them protecting the greens, they did very well.”

Alli Caldwell fired a 49 to earn medalist honors for Glenn. The Bobcats also featured Noelle Pobanz at 54, Olivia Duprey 62, Sydnie Barron 62 and Lauren Atkins 67.

Ogemaw was led by Samantha Eedy with 58, Avarie Klein 59, Aaliyah Dantzer 62 and Morgan Dunn 66.

SOCCER: STANDISH GETS THE EDGE

For the third time in its past five games, Standish-Sterling stood tall for a dramatic 1-0 victory, this time edging Clare in Jack Pine Conference play.

Standish (5-3-2, 4-1-2) finds itself in a four-way fight for the first JPC soccer title with Ogemaw, Gladwin and Bullock Creek.

Caleb Emans scored the lone goal 55 minutes into the game and the Panthers had the edge they needed.

“We were creating a ton of good scoring chances but had a difficult time finding the back of the net,” coach Doug Dahn said. “It was great to see Caleb get the game-winner as his work rate is top-class.”

The defense of Christian Lafave, Ian Emans, Carson Koin, Kaleb Selman and Lucas Verdusco led the way again. Verdusco and Zack Bell combined in goal for the shutout, the team’s fifth of the season.

SOCCER: WESTERN CAN’T BREAK THROUGH

Bay City Western battled Lapeer but couldn’t crack the goal, dropping a 3-0 decision in Saginaw Valley League play.

After dueling to a scoreless draw through the first half, Lapeer took the lead on a penalty kick with 18 minutes remaining.

“The outcome was not what we wanted,” Western coach Kyle Jean said. “But we played well, had good spirit and can take some positives from the game in addition to some things we need to fix.”

Western made a push for the tying goal but couldn’t break through, then saw Lapeer added a pair of insurance markers down the stretch.
