David Hill, the legendary exec who was the architect behind the launch of Fox Sports and many of its game-changing creations, has been tapped to receive the lifetime achievement honor at the upcoming 46th annual Sports Emmy Awards. The news was announced Thursday by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which administers the Sports Emmys.
Hill will receive the award during this year’s Sports Emmys, will take place on Tuesday, May 20, in New York City.
“David’s numerous contributions to sports broadcasting have impacted the way sports have been and will be viewed around the world forever,” said NATAS president/CEO Adam Sharp in a statement. “His innovations, including the ‘Fox Box’ score bug concept, have transformed the way viewers can watch games. He essentially introduced augmented reality to television screens decades before that phase was even coined. As an executive, he has broadened the horizons of sports media, opening doors to a new generation of television leaders.”
Hill is an Emmy winner as a sports producer and exec, who also served as chairman of the Fox network. His exec producer credits include the Super Bowl, the Oscars and more.

“Totally blown away – even more so because it’s from my peers,” Hill said in a statement.
Hill oversaw the launch of Fox Sports, and served as its first president, after the network landed an NFL deal in 1993. Fox’s coverage premiered just eight months later; among his initiatives: football’s on-field first-down marker and the constant score and clock graphic ( known as the ‘Fox Box’).
Hill also helped launch Fox Sports Net, FoxSports.com, Big Ten Network, Fox Sports 1 and more.
Hill has been honored with the Pete Rozelle Radio/Television Award from the Pro Football Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Sports Video Group’s Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2014. He also received lifetime achievement honors at the 63rd annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards in 2012 and the New York Festivals Television & Film Awards in 2016.
