ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – During a meeting Tuesday night, the Albany City Commission has approved an Academy Sports and Outdoors to be built at the Albany Mall.
The planned $11 million, 55,000 sq ft project will be the only Academy Sports and Outdoors for 70-plus miles. Developers say it will be one of the larger stores, and it will be located at the southwest corner of the Albany Mall parking lot.
City commissioners are hoping this store will bring new life to the Albany Mall. Something local business owners hope as well.
“It means something to me,” Milan Patel, a business owner, said in the meeting. “I don’t like to go to other communities and spend my money. I think my sentiment will be similar with your sentiment, the people behind me’s sentiment, and the people that live here. So we wanted to use the assets we had, which was the Chick-fil-A to the backside of Moe’s, and we want to use it in a positive force.”
Developers say they hope to break ground on the project in October.
