After months of relative silence, former Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC) is openly campaigning for former President Donald Trump, making good on her endorsement of a former opponent she bitterly fought in a tough primary — blasting out an email to his supporters saying she and him are “united.”

Her decision drew derision on social media from conservative attorney turned never-Trump strategist George Conway.

“What do you call someone who gets called a ‘birdbrain’ by a political opponent and then goes out and campaigns and raises money for that opponent?” wrote Conway.

Conway has frequently analyzed the current state of the race and its wear on Trump.

As Haley —Trump’s final rival in the primary — consolidated Republicans critical of the former president, the MAGA leader ramped up ugly personal attacks against her, despite her having worked as his U.N. ambassador in his first administration. Trump also attacked her husband’s military service, mocking his absence from the campaign trail at a moment when he was deployed overseas.

Despite Haley calling that “disgusting” at the time and urging her supporters to vote their conscience when she dropped out of the race, she ultimately endorsed the former president, and even sent legal threats to the political action committee known as Haley Voters for Harris to stop using her name on their campaigning efforts.

Even after Haley dropped out of the race, for weeks afterward Republicans opposed to Trump used votes for her as a symbolic means of protesting the party’s direction. Joe Biden’s campaign, and later Kamala Harris’ campaign, have reached out to these voters as a potential pathway to defeating Trump.
