Mark Robinson

In a surprising revelation, far-right North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson has acknowledged in a new TV ad that his wife had an abortion, despite his long-standing and vehement opposition to the procedure. This development appears to be an attempt to moderate his absolutist stance on abortion, as reported by NBC News.

“Thirty years ago, my wife and I made a very difficult decision. We had an abortion,” said Robinson in the ad. He refrained from divulging further details but expressed his agreement with North Carolina’s current 12-week abortion ban. This law was passed after a Democratic state lawmaker switched to the Republican Party, giving the GOP enough votes to override Governor Roy Cooper’s veto.

Robinson, who currently serves as the lieutenant governor, is competing against Democratic state Attorney General Josh Stein for the governorship, as Cooper is term-limited.

This message marks a shift from Robinson’s previously harsh anti-abortion rhetoric. He has frequently labeled abortion as “genocide” and claimed on Facebook Live that, โ€œAbortion in this country is not about protecting the lives of mothers โ€ฆ It is about killing the child because you werenโ€™t responsible enough to keep your skirt down.โ€

Robinson, a known ally of former President Donald Trump, has faced backlash for various controversial statements. These include questioning the Holocaust, suggesting that politics were better when women couldn’t vote, claiming that former NFL star Ray Rice’s girlfriend deserved her domestic abuse, attacking teen school shooting survivors, and advocating that children below fifth grade shouldn’t be taught science or history.

Beyond his controversial opinions, Robinson has also been embroiled in scandals regarding his past. These include failing to file taxes for five years and allegations of falsifying documents certifying he trained employees at a daycare he and his wife owned in the 2000s.

As the campaign progresses, it remains to be seen how this new admission will impact Robinson’s political aspirations and voter support in North Carolina.
