Attracting a major Olympic organization would be an “amazing win for the state,” leaders say.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — State and local leaders are courting a major U.S. Olympic sports organization that could relocate its headquarters to Colorado.
Members of Colorado’s Economic Development Commission (EDC) on Thursday revealed that the state is in code-named, confidential talks with a sports organization considering Colorado Springs and Indianapolis for a multipurpose campus that would include its headquarters.
“Project Kiwi” describes the organization as the national governing body for a major Olympic sport with a mission “to build a community and culture of health, safety, and excellence, where athletes can thrive in sport and life.” The wording is identical to the mission of USA Gymnastics, which is currently headquartered in Indianapolis.
A description of Project Kiwi also notes that the organization oversees six disciplines; USA Gymnastics on its website notes that it oversees six disciplines including acrobatic, artistic, gymnastics for all, parkour, rhythmic, and trampoline and tumbling.
Commissioners offered the organization about $1.5 million in state incentives to choose Colorado Springs for the proposed project.
They said attracting the organization would be an “amazing win” due to the potential for the campus to attract sports tourists and related organizations.
