LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — NAACP Las Vegas Branch #1111 is holding several events that will help enlighten the community with its 2024 Legal Education Series.

“What the Fuzz?” is a comprehensive six-session dive into the most pressing issues surrounding civil rights, interactions with law enforcement, and the complexities of the criminal justice system.

The first session is taking place on Feb. 29 from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the A.D. Guy Knowledge Center located at 817 N. Street.

The organization says this groundbreaking journey will unravel the intricacies of the law. A lineup of expert speakers will provide invaluable insights and lead critical discussions on a variety of important topics.

Details on the six-session event are as follows:

Traffic Stops

February 29, 20246:00 pm – 7:00 pm

This lesson will focus on traffic stops including getting pulled over and identifying oneself to officers; danger signs that cause alarms to officers in traffic stops; vehicle searches; Miranda rights and interrogations; and DUIs. We will attempt to cover frequently asked questions and provide a time for Q&A at the end.

Warrants & Searches

March 28, 20246:00 pm – 7:00 pm

This lesson will focus on entries into the home, warrant, and warrantless searches, calls for domestic violence, and the constitutional protections surrounding the home.

Jail & Bail

May 23, 20246:00 pm – 7:00 pm

This lesson will provide insights from arrest through initial appearance. We will cover bail, risk assessments, and pre-trial detention.

The Criminal Court System

June 27, 20246:00 pm – 7:00 pm

This lesson will look at how a case progresses through the court system. We will discuss the various courts, the case flow, and talk about discovery, preliminary hearings, and trials.

Crimes and Time

August 22, 20246:00 pm – 7:00 pm

This lesson will help people understand the different types of crimes and penalties. We will look at crimes that are probationable versus not, statutory sentence credits, the discretion judges have in imposing a sentence, and the importance of letters of support, sentencing memos and other mitigating efforts.

Records Sealing & Civil Rights Restoration

October 17, 20246:00 pm – 7:00 pm

This last lesson focuses on the post-conviction and discusses the rights of a person who has been convicted of a crime including gun rights, voting rights, and the right to seal one’s record.
