A report that tech billionaire Elon Musk is using young, inexperienced engineers to orchestrate control of the federal payment system came under heavy fire when a CNN anchor asked the top Democratic member on the House Oversight Committee, who came loaded with plenty of his own questions.
“I think it’s outrageous,” Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) told CNN’s Erin Burnett on Monday on her show, “OutFront.” Connolly made the comments about a new report in Wired that put a spotlight on the 19- to 24-year-old engineers the publication said are “playing a key role” as Musk “seizes control of federal infrastructure.”
“That is outrageous,” the Virginia lawmaker said. “It’s unacceptable, and it really gives the lie to any kind of idea that thoughtful analysis has gone into this kind of decision making.”
Connolly scoffed at the idea that the United States Agency for International Development could be at risk of shutting down or merging with the State Department, “based on the findings of six young men from the ages of 19 to 24.”

“Hundreds of years of aggregate experience in humanitarian assistance – child and maternal health care, famine relief, refugee assistance, disaster assistance – is going to be thrown out the window by a team of six young men just graduating from high school or college,” he told viewers.
Connolly, who said he doesn’t know what Musk and his aides are doing with the financial and sensitive government data now available to them, called on House Oversight Committee chairman James Comer (R-KY) to subpoena Musk to bring before the congressional committee.
He then offered a preview of the types of questions he is eager to ask President Donald Trump’s chair of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.
“What is Elon Musk doing getting into payment systems, which gets into databases, right?” Connolly asked. Why did he get access? How did he get access? And what is he doing with it?”
