Republican officials and strategists are privately burying their heads in their hands over former President Donald Trump’s undisciplined behavior and chaotic approach to attacking Vice President Kamala Harris, Politico reported Monday.
This comes as Trump, whose aides had spent months carefully crafting a strategy to attack President Joe Biden over his age and fitness, searches for new lines of attack against the vice president — and as he continues to pick fights over random grievances that enter his mind, including attacks on the family of Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA), whose support could be significant in a battleground state he narrowly lost four years previously.
Matthew Bartlett, a longtime GOP strategist who previously worked for the Trump administration’s State Department, had a gloomy outlook.

“This is what you would call a public nervous breakdown,” Bartlett told Politico. “This is a guy who cut through the Republican primary like a knife through butter. This is a guy who pummeled a semi-conscious president in a debate and literally out of a race. And now this is a guy who cannot come to grips with a competitive presidential race that would require discipline and effective messaging. And we’re seeing a candidate and a campaign absolutely melt down.”
This also comes at a moment when Harris is fundraising through the roof, boasting a record-shattering $310 million in July.
Another GOP strategist, who spoke anonymously, warned that the Democrats’ unity behind Harris is a big problem for Trump that he is doing nothing to address.
“Democrats are racing to remake Kamala Harris from real life Selina Meyer into the female Obama — and Donald Trump’s lack of discipline is letting them. Every day Trump swipes at shiny objects — attacking the popular governor of a swing state, questioning the race of his opponent, or battling cat lady comments by his VP — is a day he is letting Harris define herself on her own terms.”
