SPARTA, Wis. (WXOW) – Not as many teams in the area flipped the script the way Sparta did last season.
After going 1-7 in 2022, the Spartans managed to go 6-5 last year. That included a first round playoff victory against Lakeland 43-8.
The program enters year eight under Head Coach Adam Dow, who hopes his club can make some noise in a tough MVC.
“I think any year you come on out, you want to make sure you have a competitive team,” Dow said. “Across the board, we have the ability to go out and compete with anybody in the conference. Any time you’re in that that type of a situation, you take it one game at a time. It’s really one of those where you have to focus on every single game and take care of the things we can take care of. Not worrying about the long game.”
Sparta returns eight starters on each side of the ball to go with 17 seniors. Many of them had a good feeling for the season ahead after their first week of practice.
“We’re looking really good, actually,” senior Cadence Zwiefel said. “We’re starting off a lot harder than we were last year. We’re learning the more complicated things already. Throwing new stuff in there and all the guys are getting it done.”
Senior Zach Treu added that the team has a lot of talent at receiver and the offense will likely be 50-50 when it comes to calling running and passing plays.
Sparta opens the year by hosting Black River Falls.
