Well, after this Super Bowl, the Washington Commanders should be very encouraged.
The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 to win Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. Actually, the game wasn’t nearly as close as the final score, considering the Eagles led 24-0 at halftime and had second-half leads of 34-0 and 40-6 before two late Chiefs touchdowns.
The Commanders have faced the daunting Eagles defense in three games this season. The Eagles’ pass rush never looked as effective against the Commanders as it did Sunday when they dominated the Chiefs’ offensive line.
From the beginning of the game, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was running for his life, being sacked six times. The Eagles’ defense dismantled, dominated, and literally beat down the Chiefs, leading 34-0 late in the third quarter.
Remember, this was against a Kansas City team seeking to become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls. The Eagles manhandled the Chiefs so much that Commanders fans have to believe that the Commanders gave the Eagles three better games than the Chiefs did on Sunday.
Commanders fans can be very encouraged by the fact that offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is returning next season. In their three battles against the Eagles this season, Kingsbury’s scheme certainly protected Jayden Daniels much better than the Chiefs could protect Mahomes in Super Bowl LIX.
The Commanders might have lost the NFC Championship game 55-23 to the Eagles, yet it was still 34-23 in the third quarter when Austin Ekeler fumbled, and the Eagles scored on their way to outscoring Washington 21-0 in the final quarter.
By contrast, the Eagles dominated from the start. At one point, they had ten first downs, while the Chiefs only ran ten plays for a single first down.
The Eagles won ten straight this season before the Commanders beat the Eagles. It was the last time the Eagles lost this 2024 season.
So, we now know the Eagles will open the 2025 season on a Thursday night in what is usually a home game against a quality opponent.
Would the NFL schedule the Commanders at Philadelphia to launch the 2025 season in a prime-time nationally televised game?
