Right off Veterans Memorial Parkway is one of Volusia County’s largest parks and recreation facilities, Bennett Park. This Orange City park is popular among local sports teams, but it doesn’t cater to every sport. “So Bennett Park right now is a big facility, and it has baseball fields and soccer fields and non-contact sport on it,” said Jeffrey Walters, Volusia Raiders Football and Cheer Association.President of the Volusia Raiders Football and Cheer Association said his tackle football teams can’t play on those fields because of current rules. He hopes the $39 million athletic facility the county is now proposing allows it. “We do definitely appreciate the fact that they’re considering it because it will help,” said Walters. The county is still deciding on a location for the new facility, and a piece of land right across from Bennett Park is a strong contender. They’re hoping to add 12 multipurpose fields. The ones with synthetic turf could be used for sports like baseball and softball. The grass fields will serve flag football and soccer. However, Walters suggests that the county consider having each field dedicated to a specific sport so that the fields are set up with permanent dugouts, bleachers, and other amenities that cater to each sport. The county will continue discussing possible funding opportunities and partnerships to get this park up and running.
