ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – Academy Sports and Outdoors is officially on its way to the Albany Mall.
Tuesday night Albany City Commissioners approved the plans for the retail store.
The $11 million, 55,000 square foot project will be the only Academy Sports and Outdoors for 70-plus miles. It will also be one of the companyโs largest stores.
Mark Holloway, the CEO of Modern Gas Company, said some of the products he sells are similar, if not the same to some of what Academy Sports offers. However, he tells WALB that he welcomes the competition.
โWell, I think weโll lose some sales to a large department store like that, but I think itโs going to be really good for Albany because that store will draw people in from all around South Georgia,โ said Holloway. โI just think itโs going to be good for retail. You know, we were known for many years in Albany to be a regional shopping hub. And I think weโve lost that because we have lost such, you know, large department stores and stuff like that, that where people used to come and shop and maybe theyโre going out of town…I think this will be good for us.โ
Developers say they hope to break ground on the project in October.
